The story of Colorado's newest city began in 1998, when a group of five citizens realized the many advantages of incorporating the area. Over 2,500 signatures were obtained on the Centennial Petition. On July 21, 2000, an election was held to determine whether Centennial should be incorporated, leading to the city of Centennial's legal establishment on February 7, 2001.

Centennial is part of the larger Denver-Aurora metropolitan area, offering residents easy access to the city of Denver and numerous outdoor recreational areas amidst the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The city's name is reflective of Colorado's admission into the United States during its centennial year, 1876. Centennial covers a total of 28.24 square miles and its 2010 population was 103,743. It is also known as one of the safest cities in Colorado, and ranked 47th among Money Magazine's "100 Best Small Cities to Live."
